SLOW STITCHED NECKLACE: REIMAGINING TEXTILE WASTE

Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT), Woden

In a world of fast fashion and constant consumption, slow stitching offers an opportunity to pause, make with intention and reconsider what we value. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll transform small pieces of fabric into a hand-stitched ornament or wearable necklace, exploring the creative possibilities of materials that might otherwise be discarded. Through simple stitching techniques, you’ll explore how discarded and leftover fabrics can be reimagined into something beautiful, useful and personal. Choose from a selection of leftover and reclaimed fabrics, experiment with colour, texture and stitching, and create your own unique piece with guidance from the artist. All materials are provided, and no previous stitching experience is required.

SLOW STITCHED TALISMAN WORKSHOP

In a fast-paced world, slow stitching becomes a quiet yet powerful act of dissent. This workshop invites you to create a small hand stitched fabric talisman, filled with dried flowers and a handwritten message that is personal and meaningful to you. Through the act of making, you are invited to choose slowness over perfection and speed. The talisman, long considered an object of protection and strength, becomes a small and tender thing to keep and cherish, bestow or put to use. WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING You will begin with an introduction to slow stitching and the tradition of the talisman before moving into the design and making of your own piece. You will select your fabric, reflect on what dissent means to you personally, and write a message or word to place inside your talisman. You will then begin stitching with Rosalie on hand to guide you through techniques suited to your level of experience. To finish, you will stuff your talisman gently with cotton and dried flowers, securing your message inside before sewing it closed. WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BRING All materials are provided including fabric, needles and thread, dried flowers, paper and pencils and beads and shells. THIS WORKSHOP IS BEST SUITED FOR Adults and young people (16+). No prior stitching experience is required.

Earth and Sea - Duo Show

Earth and Sea is a duo exhibition by Rosalie Rose and Anna Williams, bringing together ceramics, printmaking, textiles, slow stitch, and botanical dyeing in a shared exploration of our connection to the natural world. Through materials drawn from and inspired by the earth, the works evoke a sense of belonging, attentiveness, and kinship with the landscapes that sustain us. Rooted in slow, tactile processes, the exhibition invites reflection on the beauty, resilience, and interconnectedness of life on earth.
